Betty McGlown-Travis, (born Betty McGlown; June 30, 1941 Detroit, Michigan–January 12, 2008 Royal Oak, Michigan aged 66) was one of the founding members of the Primettes, later the Supremes. In 1959, 17 years old Betty began dating Primes member, later The Temptation, Paul Williams. Since she was a blooming singer herself, and since Florence Ballard, was already singing at venues and talent shows with The Primes, it was decided that there would be a girl group spin-off, The Primettes. Melton Jenkins recruted Florence Ballard who asked Mary Wilson, who then asked Diana Ross. With their guitarist, Marvin Tarplin, they auditioned for Berry Gordy, although impressed by their vocal talent, he turned them down, because he believed they were too young, and told them to finish school then come back. The Primettes then went to a small record label in Detroit, Lupine Records. While at Lupine, they recorded Tears of Sorrow and Pretty Baby Some even say that Betty isn't even on these songs. Betty Never got a chancce to sing lead in the studio, but she did on stage in talent shows, parties, etc. She Also sang backing vocals along with the other Primettes for Eddie Floyd. After the release of the record, Betty left the group to concentrate on her new marrige, and she was replaced by local youth Barbara Martin.she died on January 12, 2008 aged 66 from complications of diabetes.
