There's a Place for Us

There's a Place For Us is an album recorded by The Supremes in 1965 and remained unreleased until July 9, 2004 by Hip-O Records.

Album Background

The album was recorded in late 1964 and throughout the first half of 1965.

It was originally supposed to be released in the summer of 1965 to tie in with the Supremes' debut appearance at the Copacabana nightclub in New York City.

Diana Ross, Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson worked with two sets of producers on the album: one in Los Angeles, California and one in Detroit, Michigan.

The album was postponed and eventually cancelled with the group's live album "The Supremes at the Copa" being released in November of 1965.

Several standard songs similar to the songs recorded for the album appeared on the group's 1966 album "I Hear A Symphony" (whose album cover is similar to the cover intended for "There's a Place for Us").

Several selections from the album would remain a staple of the Supremes' live act for several years to come (most notably the song "You're Nobody till Somebody Loves You" and the song "Somewhere" from "West Side Story").

The title of the album is derived from the first stanza of lyrics from "Somewhere."

Mary Wilson sings a rare lead vocal on the song "Our Day Will Come." Florence Ballard sings lead on the song "People."

Diana Ross sings lead on the remaining songs. The group are all featured on an original number called "Fancy Passes."

Album Release

In 2004, Hip-O Select Records remastered and released the album with the original artwork and liner notes in compact disc and digital download formats.

They also expanded the original twelve tracks to twenty-six by incorporating selections from aborted album projects such as:

"Tribute to the Girls (to have been released in late 1965/early 1966) & "The Supremes And The Motown Sound: From Broadway To Hollywood" (to have been released in 1967) as well as outtakes from released albums.
