Let Me Go The Right Way is the last single released from The Supremes' debut album "Meet The Supremes."

The single was released on November 5, 1962. It was written & produced by Berry Gordy.

It was the group's first recording and release as a trio following the departure of Barbara Martin.

The single would be the last to be produced by Berry until after the songwriting-producing team of Holland–Dozier–Holland left Motown in late 1967.

A year after this release, H-D-H would become the group main producers.

Song Background[]

Florence was prominently featured in the background especially her ad-libs on the single's outro (along with Mary) while Diana sung her natural register.

Berry (feeling the group's potential was much bigger than the other groups and sensing Diana Ross had a pop-friendly voice) told Diana to tone down on her vocal to appeal to white listeners, a plan that worked when the Supremes released their first number-one single "Where Did Our Love Go?" in 1964.

Song Composition[]

The song was built on a frenetic and gritty R&B production, it featured an unpolished raw R&B vocal Diana as the lead vocalist despite speculation that the song was led by Florence (who only led on one brief line: "A go-go right!" at the beginning).

The song talks of a woman who wants her lover to let her "go the right way" in their relationship rather than being "led astray."

Chart Performance[]

"Let Me Go The Right Way" peaked at number 90 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 26 on Billboard's Hot R&B Sides chart.

The success of the song helped The Supremes land a spot on the Motortown Revue later that year.
